Science That Gets the Heart Pumping!

(1/23): 6th grade science students recently completed an engaging unit on human body systems and how they work together. During interactive lab scenarios, students were presented with real-life situations and challenged to determine which body systems were most involved and explain how those systems depend on one another.
Students also conducted a heart rate investigation to explore how physical activity affects beats per minute (BPM). After locating their pulse, students recorded their heart rate during a resting state, after walking quickly for 30 seconds, after running in place for 30 seconds, and again following one-minute and two-minute recovery periods. Students carefully charted and graphed their results, then analyzed how heart rate increased with activity and gradually decreased during rest.

Through this hands-on experiment, students identified the muscular, respiratory, and circulatory systems as major role players during movement and recovery. By connecting data to real-life experiences, students gained a deeper understanding of how their bodies respond to activity—proving that science truly comes to life when learning gets moving!
