Preparing for the Freeze in 6th Grade Agriculture

(1/23): With an ice storm expected in Pontotoc, 6th grade agriculture students put their problem-solving skills to work by preparing ahead for their classroom animals. Unsure if the outdoor water spigot would freeze, students filled containers with fresh water and moved them into the greenhouse, where the heat is running to protect newly planted seedlings. They also added hay to the chicken coop and the rabbit pen to help keep the animals warm. During the ice storm, the agriculture teacher and assistant principal will care for the chickens to ensure they stay safe and healthy. By planning ahead and thinking through possible challenges—including the hope that the greenhouse keeps power—students demonstrated responsibility, teamwork, and real-world agricultural skills while caring for their animals during winter weather.
