(1/12): Mrs. Koon’s PE class enjoyed a game of Swamp Ball to celebrate completing our first week of our Fitness Focused Physical Education.

(1/11): Happy New Year from Mrs. Brumley's fifth grade class! We are beginning the new year with a new unit in both Math and Science. In math, students are learning about volume and in science they are studying our solar system.

Just before Christmas science students built Egg Crash Cars while studying Newton's Laws. They learned the importance of seatbelts in cars to go along with it.

(1/10): Mrs. Wooley's class started learning about finding volume this week. Students were instructed to build their own rectangular prism out of unit cubes. Then, students were able to pass shapes around the room to find different volumes. Students had so much fun sharing these masterpieces with other students around the room.

(1/10): Students in Mrs. Whitworth and Ms Swain's sixth grade science classes demonstrated Newton's 1st Law of Motion and how friction plays a part.
Newton's 1st Law of Motion states that an object at rest or an object in motion will stay at rest or in motion until acted upon by force. Students discovered that friction plays a huge part in motion. The students had to determine which student would cross the finish line first based on the sole of the shoes. Of course, tennis shoes had more grip, but once hand towels were taped to the soles of the tennis shoes, they lost their grip and won every time! Stay tuned for the next Science Scenario!

(1/10): Ms. Swain and Mrs. Whitworth’s sixth grade science classes had fun creating popsicle stick chain reactions to introduce Newton’s Laws. Students made a chain of popsicle sticks and then released the last one to see the effect of these laws. The expression on their faces says it all!

(12/15): Wings, jagged teeth, sharp hooves, large ears, blubber, and thorny spikes! These are just a few of the adaptations students are including when creating their Imaginary Animal Project! Student groups were assigned an imaginary environment (Kanubi Desert, Plains of Moldovia, Majestic Mountains, Jungle Island). Each environment has a passage the students analyzed to determine what adaptations their animal would need to survive and care for its young. Once completed, students completed individual forms explaining explicitly what adaptations the animal has and the purpose of each. Imaginations, conversations, and collaboration is what you'll find while the students work hard to complete their project!

(12/15): Fifth grade students in Mrs. Lori Johnson's intellectually gifted class we presented with a problem: The Wet Bandits are out and trying to steal Christmas gifts. First students had to accurately draw the layout of their homes. They then had to draw up a battle plan to protect their homes from the infamous Wet Bandits. A special thanks goes out to Kevin McAllister for his inspiration.

(12/15): Mrs. Swain and Mrs. Whitworth's Agriculture classes MADE BUTTER! After watching a video of where "cream" comes from, students poured heavy cream in a 4 oz cup, put a lid on it, and shook it vigorously for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, they observed and recorded color, consistency, and amount of "milk" separated from cream. They shook it for 5 more minutes, poured off the remaining "milk", put honey, brown sugar, (some even put hot sauce) in it and ate it with crackers. All loved it! Most even loved drinking the milk separated from the cream. It so exciting to see students so interested in old-fashioned ways of life. Our Farm to Table curriculum has kept these students engaged and learning new things this semester. We are so looking forward to next semester!

(12/13): Students in Mrs. Wooley's fifth grade math class had so much fun preparing for our upcoming benchmark test this week. Students worked as teams to become detectives and solve math problems to help Santa find the elf who was stealing all of the cookies.
