PMS Students Learning About America’s Foundations

(9/18): Pontotoc Middle School students recently explored the rich history of our nation by listening to lessons on the U.S. Constitution, the Founding Fathers, and the core beliefs that shaped America. Students learned how important early leaders like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and George Washington and strong voices like Paul Revere and Sybil Ludington played key roles in the fight for independence.
Through these discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of the phrase “We the People” and how it continues to inspire civic responsibility, freedom, and unity today. Our Warriors are building not only knowledge of history, but also appreciation for the values that guide our country.

PMS Librarian Attends LAMP Workshop

(9/15): Our school librarian, Mrs. Mathews, recently attended LAMP, a professional library workshop focused on keeping our library program strong and up-to-date. During the session, librarians learned about updates to the MAGNOLIA online database, providing even more high-quality resources for students and teachers. The workshop also highlighted the Magnolia Book Awards and this year’s exciting list of nominees—books that encourage a love of reading and thoughtful discussions.
The Mississippi Department of Education shared ways libraries can support student learning by incorporating social studies standards and STEM activities into library lessons. We’re excited to bring these new ideas back to Pontotoc Middle School to keep our library a place where reading, research, and innovation come together!

PMS Ag - Fall Planting Frenzy!

(9/15): Our 6th grade Agriculture students have been busy getting their fall crops in the ground — broccoli, turnips, mustard, and carrots. They know it’s their last chance before the cooler weather sets in, so it’s been a bit of a race against the clock. As one student joked, “We’ll see who grows faster — the veggies or the cold!” No matter what, the students are learning that timing, teamwork, and a little patience are all part of the fun of farming.

(9/15): At Pontotoc Middle School, we are so proud of our students who continue to demonstrate positive character traits each day. From showing kindness to classmates, to helping others in need, to making responsible choices in and out of the classroom—our Warriors are shining examples of what it means to be respectful, caring, and dependable.
These students remind us that character counts and small acts of goodness can make a big difference in our school community. Way to go, Warriors—keep leading with integrity and heart!

Building Ideas: Paper Tower STEM Challenge

(9/8): This week, our middle school students put their critical thinking and engineering skills to the test with the Paper Tower Challenge—a hands-on STEM activity focused on teamwork, design, and creative problem-solving.
Given a limited amount of paper and tape, students were challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower possible. Sounds simple? Not quite! Each team had to plan carefully, test structural stability, and adjust their designs on the fly as their towers grew taller—and wobblier.
This challenge encouraged students to think like engineers: experimenting with shapes, testing for balance, and learning from each attempt. It also reinforced the importance of communication and collaboration under time constraints.
In the end, some towers stood tall, others toppled dramatically—but every group walked away with a deeper understanding of the design process and the value of persistence.
STEM is all about learning through doing—and in this case, doing with just a few sheets of paper and a whole lot of brainpower.
AR kickoff

AR Kickoff at PMS was a Blast!

(9/8): Pontotoc Middle School launched this year’s Accelerated Reading (AR) program with an exciting Kickoff Event! Students and teachers joined together to play fast-paced “Minute to Win It” games that had everyone laughing and cheering. The energy was contagious as students showed off their skills and competed for prizes.
The best part? Winners got to select a brand-new AR book to jump-start their reading journey for the year! What a fun way to celebrate reading, teamwork, and school spirit. Way to go, Warriors—let’s make this an amazing year of reading growth!
